Sketching in the garden

...at Descanso Gardens, in La Canada...where I recently had the great pleasure of teaching a "Sketching on Location" workshop series.  One of the things I enjoy most is the preparation.  I try out ways to do things with simple means--just with line, just with values, and move on from there...as I plan, I hope everyone who comes will discover something, and have a great time!

Some quick sketching at Descanso Gardens

...thinking again about the meat and potatoes of sketching...some quick studies in line and tone...

...before moving on to some color...the range between a warm yellow and deep Indranthene blue...

...and then more recently a large study of light and shade in a favorite spot, the Japanese Garden...

...and a few more studies in black and white...on the road to Santa Barbara...

...and from a cafe window in Pasadena...

Urban Trees

...are certainly a favorite subject...on the streets, in parking lots, or in city gardens...

A grand old eucalyptus in Highland Park that survived the windstorm a little over a year ago...

Some time after the storm, a giant oak tree that used to greet visitors  near the entrance of Huntington Gardens had to be pulled up by massive roots due to storm damage--I just happened to be there that day and had to get a quick sketch of an old friend...

A pair of parkway trees in Montrose seen in fall, and later on in winter......and some views in the same neighborhood in summer and fall...

Tall palms at the LA Arboretum...and on the street in Glendale...

A picnic at Griffith Park...

Sketching at L.A.'s museums...

Some sketchbook sketches from some recent museum visits...
at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art during a recent Worldwide Sketchcrawl with the L.A. group...sketching in the courtyard, and the new installation--Michael Heizer's Levitated Mass--looking west and east...

...and across the street, "The Wall Project"--10 original Berlin Wall segments brought to Los Angeles by the Wende Museum to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the fall of the wall.  Several artists were invited to paint 5 of the segments:  Kent Twitchell, Thierry Noir, Farrah Karapetian and Marie Astrid Gonzalez.  I was very moved to realize I was seeing a portion of that Wall here in my home town.
Sketching the La Brea Tar Pits
in Hancock Park, next to the George C. Page Museum...

sketching art and life at the Getty Center...Rene Magritte's "Delusions of Grandeur" in 2 views...

the huge floating maze that sits
at the center of the wonderfully eccentric garden designed by artist Robert Irwin...the fountain in the courtyard, and some earlier views of people eating and relaxing next to the marble-clad block walls...
