Los Angeles Hills

...are one of my favorite subjects for urban sketching!

...from Mt. Washington, I happened to see a brush fire start, and then quickly was extinguished by firefighting helicopters!

Most of the year, our hills are golden brown, but for a fleeting moment in early spring
when they are carpeted in velvet green...

The Los Angeles Landscape...

When I began urban sketching...I focused especially on the physical landscape of Los Angeles, especially at the hilly north end...and the winding freeways...also ordinary views of shopping centers and streets...

Gardens and Sculpture

...at the L.A. Arboretum, Norton Simon in Pasadena, and the Getty Villa...

Descanso Gardens

...is a lovely, peaceful garden in La Canada...and a great place to sketch in a variety of media...

Twentynine Palms

...is a desert town east of Palm Springs, where I enjoy visiting an old friend who lives near Joshua Tree National Park...such a pleasure to observe the different times of the year, different times of day.  Here are views of the town, the park, and the desert...

Drawing on Location in the Desert

...in Arizona and on the way...Monument Valley, Sedona and Quartzsite...

on a long stretch of highway...

...a bumpy dirt road outside of Sedona,
and snow flurries in January near
Monument Valley...

There's nothing quite like
Monument Valley...

...a tour through neighboring Mystery Valley
that requires a Navajo guide...on New Years Day
--unforgettable!
